Lessons and trail rides that take adult beginners, sorted by how far you have to drive, with the two things operators bury: rider weight limits and who shuts for the winter.
Worth knowing before you start looking: Boulder itself has almost no public
riding. One operator inside the city teaches adults, and it doesn't
publish a price. Everything else on this page is a drive, from 25 minutes to
Longmont up to an hour to Estes Park. That's simply the shape of riding on the Front Range, and knowing it saves you an evening
of searching for something closer that doesn't exist.
Check the weight limit against the ride you want, not the barn
National Park Gateway Stables tightens its limit as the ride gets longer:
280 lb on the two hour ride, 240 lb on the three hour, 220 lb on the
six hour, and 200 lb on the full day. Sylvan Dale sets a flat
220 lb. Clearing the limit for a short ride tells you nothing about
whether you can book a long one, and finding out at the barn is a wasted
morning.
Most operators near Boulder publish no weight limit at all. That isn't the
same as not having one, so it's a question worth asking on the phone.
If you want to learn to ride

Adult lessons, 18 and over, one hour including tacking and untacking as well as riding time. Arena instruction in an English and hunter-jumper style.

The only operator we could confirm inside Boulder that teaches adults. No closure notice appears, so it looks year-round. You'll have to call for the price.

Intro to Horsemanship and Rusty Spurs one hour lessons, all ages, plus trail rides.
Price
Lessons $74, or a ten pack at $64 each. Trail rides from $70 for an hour on the River Trail up to $114 for a Mount Carbon sunset ride.
Limits
No published weight limit, age minimum or helmet policy.
New operator as of 2026, so ignore anything you find quoting the previous one. Worth the drive mainly if you want lessons and trail riding from the same place at a lower price than the Estes options.
If you just want to ride out
Guided trail rides, no instruction, no experience needed. Both of these are a
real drive, and both are worth it for the scenery rather than the horsemanship.

Two hours $115, two hour dinner ride $95, three hours $160, six hours $315, full day $440 for eight hours or $490 for nine.
Limits
The weight limit tightens as the ride lengthens: 280 lb on the two hour, 240 lb on the three hour, 220 lb on the six hour, 200 lb on the full day. Minimum age 6 on the two hour ride. The full day expects some riding experience.
Book online, or call 970-586-5269 if the slots look full. That sliding weight limit is the thing to check before you plan a long day, because clearing it for a short ride tells you nothing about the long one.

What it is
Day-visitor trail rides. There's a separate Western riding instruction program, but see the note.
Price
One hour $80 a rider, 90 minutes $100, two hours $120, with a suggested 15% gratuity on top.
Limits
220 lb weight limit, minimum age 7. Winter riding, December to March, is limited to the one hour and 90 minute rides. Summer is weekends only.
Their six lesson Western riding package at $360 is group-only and SOLD OUT for both 2026 sessions, per their own site. The trail rides above are separate and still bookable. Cancel inside 24 hours and you pay half.
Specialist and private barns
Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center
at 11968 Mineral Road, Longmont, works with adults, but it's a needs-based
therapeutic program rather than general public riding, and their own criteria
require a need for that specialized environment. Prices aren't published;
303-652-9131.
Body n Soul Equestrian
in Boulder County offers private lessons, trail riding and natural
horsemanship, by appointment only, with no published prices; 720-899-0120.
Wildsong Ranch
at 10069 North 65th Street, Longmont lists lessons as a service, but the
lessons page itself returns an error, so call 720-378-8412.
Places that won't take you, and why
Four barns near Boulder come up in searches and can't serve an adult
beginner. Mountain View Equestrian in Golden teaches ages 2
to 16 only, per its own site. Rabbit Mountain Equestrian Center
is private boarding with no public rides. Medicine Horse runs
equine therapy that's explicitly ground-based, so there's no riding.
Cascade Farms is a hunter-jumper boarding barn with no
confirmed public adult lesson.
One unresolved: Cowpoke Corner Corral in Estes Park shows as
closed on a listing site with no live page of its own to confirm it either
way. Their number is 970-586-5890 if you want to settle it. We've not
listed it as open or closed, because we don't know.
