If this is a summer weekend
Summer is the fullest calendar and the busiest week to be here. Downtown is where most of it happens: Bands on the Bricks on Wednesday evenings in early summer, the arts fest in July, and both farmers market days running at 13th and Canyon.
Two things worth knowing before you commit to a Saturday. Anything outdoors takes more planning in summer than the rest of the year, because several places above town charge for parking or need a reservation in season, and Outdoor Boulder's parking guide is where those are all laid out properly. And almost all of it eases off on a weekday. If your schedule has any give in it at all, come Tuesday.
If this is a fall or winter weekend
Autumn is the locals' answer for the best time to be here. The heat drops, the aspens turn gold up the canyons, the summer crowds go home, and the calendar keeps going: the Pearl Street Stampede runs the night before every CU home game, and Switch on the Holidays closes the season in late November. One thing to check first: CU home football Saturdays close Fiske Planetarium and often the CU Art Museum, so don't build a rainy-day plan around either without looking.
Winter is the cheapest season to visit and by far the quietest. Every museum, the mall and the creek path run year-round, and the Light Up the Holidays season carries December downtown. The mountain roads above town close for the winter, so this is a season for the flat half of Boulder, which is more than enough for a weekend.
Spring is the one worth managing expectations about. Downtown is lovely and the market opens the first Saturday in April, but the weather does whatever it likes, and anything above town can be shut on a day that looks perfectly fine from the sidewalk. We don't try to duplicate them. What this page covers instead is what's open and reachable in each season, which is the thing those calendars won't tell you.
What's the best time of year to visit Boulder?
September and October. The heat drops, the aspens turn gold up the canyons, the summer crowds thin out, and the fall event calendar is still going with the Pearl Street Stampede before every CU home game. Summer has the fullest calendar of all, with Bands on the Bricks, the arts fest and both farmers market days, but it's also the busiest and the most expensive week to book. Winter is far and away the quietest, and everything indoors stays open.
Do I need a reservation for anything in Boulder on a weekend?
Hardly anything, which is one of the nicer things about the place. The market, the mall, the free events and the galleries are all walk-up. Fiske Planetarium sells tickets per show, the better restaurants fill up so book those ahead, and one state park outside town needs a timed-entry reservation in season, which our sister site Outdoor Boulder covers.
Is Boulder busy on summer weekends?
Yes, especially downtown and especially in July. The mall absorbs it well and the market is worth the crowd, but if your schedule has any give in it, a weekday visit is quieter and cheaper across the board. That's the single most useful piece of Boulder timing advice on this site.
What's there to do in Boulder in winter?
Everything indoors stays open, and it's the cheapest season to come. The Pearl Street Mall, all the museums and the Boulder Creek Path run year-round, and the Light Up the Holidays season downtown carries December. What you lose is the mountain roads above town, which close for the winter, and the farmers market, which finishes just before Thanksgiving.
